STARKVILLE, Miss. --- Former Mississippi State standout and current Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Maholm is in the running for a pair of
prestigious community service-based Major League Baseball awards.
Maholm, a native of Holly Springs, Miss., is the Pirates' nominee for both the 2009 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award and the Roberto
Clemente Award. Both awards honor Major Leaguers for their community involvement, sportsmanship and contributions to their teams.
Voting for the two awards is being conducted online. To participate in the selection process for the Roberto Clemente Award, first presented in 1971, fans should log on to http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/mlb/fan_forum/moy09_award/ballot.jsp. Fans have until Sept. 13 to help choose the six finalists for the 2009 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, with online voting at http://mlb.mlb.com/sponsors/chevy/clemente/index.jsp.
Paul Maholm and his wife Jessica have been active in cancer awareness campaigns through his involvement with Gilda's Club of Western
Pennsylvania and that organization's "BBQ with the Bucs" fund-raiser.
Maholm, in his fifth season with the Pirates, is 7-8 with a 4.72 ERA and a staff-leading 113 strikeouts. He's registered 37 wins and
compiled a 4.39 ERA during his Major League career. A first-round draft pick of the Pirates in 2003, the three-time All-American led State in wins in each of his three years, recording 27 wins and totaling 273 career strikeouts, third-most in Mississippi State baseball history.
