October 26, 2009

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Mississippi State men's golf team stands in seventh place following day one action at the David Toms Invitational played at the par-71 Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, La. The day consisted of the first and second rounds played, where the Bulldogs fired a first round score of 288 and improved nine strokes in round two with a 279.

MSU stood in eighth place following their first round efforts, and following their nine-stroke improvement, the Bulldogs moved up to seventh place among the 14-team field. State trails fifth-place Ole Miss and Pepperdine by one stroke and are nine strokes behind leader and host-school LSU.

True freshman Robi Calvesbert is the Bulldogs' leader through two rounds of play as the rookie stands in a tie for eighth place among the 75-player individual field and is among the leaders in par-5 scoring. Calvesbert notched first-day score of 139 that included a career-best 4-under-par 67 in round two, which ties the lowest round by MSU this fall. Calvesbert also notched one of four eagles made on day one, on whole number-two in the second round.

State's sophomore Lee Heaton shot rounds of 70 and 73, and stands in a tie for 28th in the individual field. MSU's true freshman Mike Genovese bounced back from a 3-over-par first round, scoring even-with-par in the second round to put the youngster in a tie for 38th. Tying Genovese's two-round score was fellow true freshman Brad Mason of MState, who shot a team-high 77 in the first round, but rebounded in the second round with a career-best 68. Mason also led MSU with nine-birdies through the first two rounds and is among the leaders in par-4 scoring. Sophomore Brooks Bankhead of Mississippi State rounds out the Bulldog lineup with a two-round score of 148.

MSU will tee off for the final round of play tomorrow at 9 a.m. alongside Northwestern and Rice. Live stats will be available at www.mstateathletics.com.
