STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State head coach Clay Homan announced the signing of two prepsters for next season's squad today, with Chad Ramey and Tyler Smith inking with the Bulldogs.
Ramey hails from Fulton, Miss., where he is a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School. He was the 2009 Mississippi Junior Amateur Champion, as well as the 2009 Pros of Tomorrow Champion. Ramey finished 18th or better in all national tournaments in which he participated in and was named the 2008 Mississippi Junior Golf Association Player of the Year. He was a part of the 2007 and 2009 Mississippi High School 4A state championship teams and earned individual championship honors in 2007 and 2009. Ramey currently stands 52nd in the nation in the National Junior Golf Scoreboard and was the 2009 "Pop Star Award" which is reward by the Clarion Ledger and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame to the best high school golfer in the state of Mississippi. He currently boasts a 3.52 (4.0 scale) grade point average and is the son of Mr. Stanley and Patricia Ramey.
Also joining the Bulldogs for the 2010-2011 seasons is Smith, who is a native of Nashville, Tenn. and will graduate from Franklin Road Academy, where he earned team most valuable player honors. Smith has qualified for the Tennessee High School state tournament in all four years he has been eligible and was the low medalist in the regional tournaments for the past two seasons. He also claimed three championships in 2009 at the Brentwood Invitational, Davidson Academy Invitational and Father Ryan Invitational. Smith sports a 3.8 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and has been active in volunteering with local youth golf camps as well as Special Olympics events. Smith is the son of Sherri Smith and the late Gary Smith.
MSU golf will begin their spring season on Feb. 13, in Gainesville, Fla., at the Gator Invitational.
