STARKVILLE, Miss. - A two-run, sixth-inning blast by senior designated hitter Russ Sneed proved to be the game-winner Friday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field as the Maroons nipped the Grays 4-3 in Game 2 of the 2009 MSU Fall World Series. The series is now tied, with the third game of the five-game series set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
Sneed was the hitting star of the game, delivering a run-scoring single that put the Maroon team on top 2-0 in the first inning and later the two-run home run to left-centerfield. Senior first baseman Connor Powers laced an RBI double to drive in the game's first run.
After being shut out the first three innings, the Grays struck for three runs in the fourth on on an RBI double by junior shortstop Nick Vickerson and run-producing singles by Dallas Hannah and Carlos Leal.
Sophomore righty Devin Jones, who came on in relief of Maroon team starter Tyler Whitney in the fourth, held the Gray squad scoreless over the final three frames for the win. Sophomore southpaw Nick Routt drew the start for the Gray team, striking out five in four innings. Senior right-hander Greg Houston replaced Routt in the fifth, taking the loss on Sneed's two-run homer.
