STARKVILLE, Miss. - After a convincing 106-48 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff to open the season on Friday, the Mississippi State women's basketball team continues its season-opening four-game homestand Sunday, playing host to Atlantic-10 member East Tennessee State. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. at the Humphrey Coliseum.
In the season opener, Mississippi State had three players record double-doubles. Tysheka Grimes had 22 points and 12 rebounds while Mary Kathryn Govero had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Chanel Mokango had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs shot 44.7 percent from the floor while holding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 25.4 percent from the floor. The Lady Bulldog defense forced 27 turnovers while forcing 16 steals.
East Tennessee State comes into Sunday's contest having won its season debut, downing UT-Chattanooga 85-21. The Lady Bucs are led by senior forward TaRonda Wiles who paced ETSU in the opener, scoring 24 points. ETSU is coached by Karen Kemp who is in her 15th season with the Lady Bucs.
Mississippi State and ETSU have met just two previous times in the series, splitting those meetings. The Lady Bulldogs downed ETSU 74-64 in 2004 but fell 78-53 in 2005. State is 7-4 against A-10 schools and have won three straight against teams from that conference dating back to 2006.
Following Sunday's contest, State returns home on Wed., Nov. 18 to host Utah Valley before playing host to Maryland on Nov. 22.
