STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southeastern Conference announced on Friday that 22 members of the 2009 Mississippi State football team were named to the league's Academic Honor Roll. The total is the second-highest ever achieved by a Bulldog football team, trailing only last year's 28 honorees.
Head coach Dan Mullen's squad posted its second-highest team grade point average ever during the fall semester, recording a combined GPA of 2.67. Senior Jamar Chaney and freshmen Johnathan McKenzie and Sam Watts each posted a perfect 4.0 for the fall semester, while Sean Brauchle, J.C. Brignone, John McMillan and Tyson Lee all earned Dean's Scholars List honors for posting above a 3.50. Of that group, only McKenzie did not make the SEC Academic Honor Roll, as freshmen are not eligible until completing 24 hours of credit.
Rising seniors Aaron Feld and Mark Melichar both earned the recognition for the third consecutive season, leading the team.
