MSU's Alvarado Helps Mexico to FIFA U20 World Cup Quarterfinals

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State sophomore Monica Alvarado’s stay in Germany was extended Wednesday morning as the Mexican National Team rallied to tie Nigeria and clinch a spot in the quarterfinals at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Mexicans netted the equalizer in the 78th minute and won Group C via goal differential. The tie moved Mexico from third place in the group to the top spot.

Alvarado and her Mexico teammates will meet the second-place finisher from Group D in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. The match is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.com.

The Southlake, Texas, native has logged 116 minutes in the first three matches, drawing starting nods in a 3-3 tie against Japan and a 1-0 victory over England.
