BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mississippi State men's tennis players Louis Cant and Artem llyushin put on impressive performances Sunday, picking up several wins to advance to the qualifying finals of the Birmingham Futures Event.
Cant dominated his first opponent of the day. He powered past Tobechukwu Okoye in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. His second match proved to be tougher; however, as he fought through a tough first set for a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2 comeback win over Robbye Poole.
llyushin's path to the finals was a little easier. He played one match, but was just as impressive as his Bulldog teammate. llyushin ousted Kevin Fleck in another dominating 6-1, 6-2 straight-set performance.
Both players will vie for a spot in the main draw tomorrow, when they play in the finals of this weekend's qualifying event.
