STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State incoming Director of Athletics Greg Byrne announced Saturday the hiring of John Cohen as Bulldog head baseball coach.

Cohen, 41, comes to State from the University of Kentucky, where he served the past five seasons as the Wildcats’ head coach.

“We were charged with leading a national search for the best coach available to lead our baseball program,”  Byrne said.  “We have done that with the hiring of John Cohen.”

Cohen played collegiate baseball at MSU from 1987-90.  He helped the Bulldogs to regional competition during his three years of eligibility at State, including one trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

“I feel that a thorough national search was conducted and that we have found the best head coach available to lead our baseball program,”  Interim President Dr. Vance Watson said.  “We have found that man in John Cohen.”

Cohen has a 321-197-1 record during nine years as a head coach at Northwestern (La.) State and Kentucky.  He has also served as an assistant coach at Missouri and Florida.
